Mid-week update - Week 3
Maths
This week we have continued to work on symmetry. Some pupils have extended their learning in this area to look at rotational symmetry and shape rotation.
We were making some patterns using rotation by 90 degrees.
Jeff Kinney - Puffin Virtually Live
On Monday afternoon we were lucky enough to view the web chat with Jeff Kinney, the author of the 'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' series.
We were all VERY excited about this. We had our predictions ready for book number 9. Jeff announced what the title and cover will be.
This book will be out in November 2014.
Jeff Kinney also taught us how to draw the main character, Greg.
Project
This week we are exploring 'dissolving'.
We started off by finding out what solids dissolved into water. If it did dissolve it was called a 'solution' and if it didn't dissolve it was called a 'mixture'.
We started by measuring out our liquid really carefully.
We chose to use 250ml of water.
Then we added our solids to the water and mixed them.
We found out that coffee, sugar and salt dissolved but sand rice, flour, soil and chalk didn't. Some of the solids tricked us as they looked like they had dissolved but when we left the jar to settle for a while we realised that it hadn't dissolved at all.
On Tuesday we explored whether temperature made a difference to the speed of dissolving. We used 3 different temperature of water and added sugar 3 sugar cubes to each.
To keep the experiment fair we made sure that we mixed each jar of water the same amount of times each.
We learned that the hotter the water the faster the rate of dissolving.
