Last week we were finishing off our Information Handling topic.  We collected information from all of the classes on 'favourite sports in SPS'.  We used tally mark tables to gather the information for each class.  Then we created one big tally table to organise the whole school totals.

One group then chose to display this information in a bar chart.  They produced a large version using paper and paint.  They carefully marked on the scale using a metre stick.

Another group chose to create a pictogram.  They decided that it would be very time consuming to cut out one picture per person who liked each sport so they decided to use multiples.  They thought that 1 picture could represent 2 people so only half the number of pictures were required.

Both the bar chart and pictogram are up on display in the P4-7 shared area.

Today we went on a class trip to the Orkney Museum in Kirkwall.  Janette Park very kindly offered to take us around the museum and explain what Orkney was like in Victorian times. She also gave us a quick run through of Orkney's history from the Stone age right through to modern day - a bit of a whistle stop tour.  The children were showing a great deal of interest in the other areas of the museum so perhaps they could return some day in the school holidays with their families to have a proper look (and play with the many exciting games and activities set out)

We looked at the Stone, Bronze and Iron Age.

We moved on to the Picts and Vikings then too.

 VICTORIAN ORKNEY - 19th Century

We had a look at the various displays set out and we recognised some of the artefacts from things we have been learning in class.

We have spoked about Penny Farthings and Mangles in class.

Janette was showing some of us how to use an abacus to do sums.

We explored the toys and entertainment.

Some of the boys really liked the model of Melsetter House in Hoy. They thought it looked quite like Skail House.

Miss Kelday was impressed with the school jotter. The handwriting was REALLY neat and all joined up.  Primary 5 have a lot of work to do to match the handwriting of Victorian children.

We then visited the 20th Centrury section.  Janette showed us a few of the main exhibits here. We looked at the Ploughin Match costume that Janette wore when she was peedie.

It was a super class trip to the museum and well worth a look if you have any free time available as a family.
Thank you to Janette Park for showing us around and to Vega Poke for coming with us.
