Another busy week in Primary 5...
In maths we have been learning all about Volume and Capacity.
We explored estimation of volumes. We were using litres (l) and millilitres (ml). Some of us were able to identify fractions of litres. For example 500ml = 1/2l
We also completed some problem solving activities based on volume and capacity. We tried to work out how much coffee Mr McIntosh would drink this term is he had 3 cups per day. We found out that he would drink nearly 48l of coffee! We thought this was an awful lot of coffee!!!
One group played a card game using measuring in ml. Each player had to fill the container to a chosen amount. The other players had to check their volume cards to see if they had one that matched. The first player to get rid of all of their cards won the game.
At the end of the week we were exploring how to measure accurately. We decided that having a scale on a container helped us to measure. We used a 2 litre bottle and made our own scales. We had to measure the amounts carefully to make our scale accurate. This was a tricky task and took a lot of thinking in our groups.
Tongue Twisters
During Reading Skills this week we were looking at poetry. We explored Tongue Twisters.
We had lots of fun reading them out. We realised that reading in our heads and reading out loud are 2 different skills. Reading Tongue Twisters out loud was much trickier than saying it in our heads.
We had a go at writing our own tongue twister poems using alliteration. This is when the same sound is repeated in a phrase or sentence.
Some of our favourite tongue twister poems were:
Have a go at home.
Which one is your favourite? Which one is the most tricky to say quickly?
World Book Day
Primary 5 have been given the responsibility of organising World Book Day. This is on Thursday 6th March.
We are encouraging everyone to dress us as their favourite book character for the day. There will be prizes awarded for the best costume.
We are also running a 'Design your own bookmark' competition. Again, there are prizes for the best design in each class.
Jayden and Daniel made an announcement to the rest of the school using the tannoy system. They practised what they were going to say before hand and then made their announcement after lunch break.
Here they are making their announcement.
And finally...
Tom took in a brilliant photo album full of memories from his childhood. He explained his photos well and the rest of the class sat and listened nicely, showing the skills of a quality audience.
Have a nice weekend everyone!
