Troot in the Shed

Yesterday Malcolm Thomson from the Orkney Trout Association came to P6 to start us off with our mini topic - Troot in the Shed.

He taught us all about the life cycle of a trout and where they live in Orkney.  It was a really interesting presentation.

He then gave us about a hundred trout eggs for us to look after.  We are going to keep them in a tank up in the plant room, where it is cool.

Small groups will visit them everyday to check the water and air temperature and remove any eggs that have not survived.

We visited the plant room...

We tested the temperature of the water. Mr McLeod collected this water from the burn.

Malcolm released the eggs into the tank.

Can you see them?

We too out the 4 eggs that hadn't survived.

After about a month or so, P6 will release the hatched eggs into the burn near the school.

5 primary schools in Orkney are completing this topic and a blog has been set up to record the progress of the project.

Feel free to have a look at the blog - we will be hoping to add information to it too.
